Modified massage is used when a person cannot receive a traditional, face-down table massage or have special requests due to medical or mental health related reasons. Special pillows and other accommodations are made by the therapist to make sure that everyone can safely receive a therapeutic experience. This may include pregnant women, people receiving cancer treatments, people under hospice care, and survivors of sexual assault/abuse.

Hot bamboo sticks and rods are used similarly to hot stones. The bamboo can be used to manipulate tissues with heat and are shaped in a way that can be rolled along muscle groups and used with leverage against areas of the body to provide very deep pressure.
